UW Research Vessel Assisted By Discovery Health MD

Discovery Health MD is pleased and honored to not only collaborate with the University of Washington to provide our Back-To-Work COVID-19 Testing Services, but also to be assisting the UW research vessels with COVID-19 response.

“We heard Discovery Health MD’s name through references and recommendations, based on their excellent reputation with the fishing fleet across the Pacific Northwest,” said Robert Kamphaus, Manager of Marine Operations at UW. “They put out some great guidance for COVID-19 onboard procedures that quickly became a reference for a lot of operators to look at.”

The Seattle Times – Trawl fishing in the age of the coronavirus

Discovery Health MD featured in Seattle Times article about the fishing industry’s response to COVID-19:

Aleutian Spray Fisheries and some other fishing companies have hired Discovery Health MD, a Seattle-based firm with long involvement with the maritime fleet, to conduct two rounds of shore-side screening  at the beginning and end of quarantines. The protocol administers swab tests that identify active cases of COVID-19 as well as antibody tests that may indicate if a person previously was exposed to the virus that causes the disease.

(Article) US harvesting giants face first major test of coronavirus preparations

As Pacific Whiting season begins there are a lot of questions around COVID-19 and crew safety. Our team continues to work closely with government agencies, industry associations, and healthcare groups to address these issues and provide guidance. Our CEO Dr. Ann Jarris recently contributed to an article by Rachel Sapin of IntraFish. Check out an excerpt below, and visit the IntraFish website to view the full article (link below).

With the US Pacific whiting fishery set to open on May 15, five major seafood companies are planning to test crews for coronavirus in addition to implementing safety and quarantine measures.

American Seafoods, Arctic Storm, Glacier Fish, Aleutian Spray Fisheries, and Trident Seafoods will be providing the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test to crew members, Matt Tinning, director of public affairs for the At-Sea Processor’s Association (APA), told IntraFish.

Several of the companies are working with the University of Washington and Discovery Health MD to implement testing, with hake season viewed as an opportunity to plan for pollock fishing in Alaska later this year.

“CDC and public health guidance is rapidly changing in relation to testing asymptomatic workers,” Dr. Ann Jarris, CEO of Discovery Health MD, told IntraFish.

“As testing capacity allows, our industry is working to incorporate testing into its screening protocols.”

Alaska’s governor has not mandated testing for incoming seafood workers, which has raised substantial concerns for communities over how the virus will be contained if there is an outbreak aboard a vessel or at a processing plant.

Dr. Ann Jarris & NationalFisherman.com Hosting COVID-19 Webinar

COVID-19 has and will continue to reshape the way entire industries function, and commercial fishing is no different. The Discovery Health MD Team has put together a COVID19 Vessels Procedures and Flowchart for Assessing Symptomatic Crew document to help commercial fishing captains and companies develop protocols for dealing with COVID-19 on vessels and with their crew. While it is not intended as a standard of care or as an industry standard, it can be a resource to help captains and crews determine how to best move forward. Join Ann Jarris, MD, MBA, FACEP as she explains how this resource can help crews work through these challenging and rapidly developing issues. Live audience questions will be answered toward the end of the event.
